Times Square

When we were in California planning this vacation, I was a little tentative about taking my wife and children to New York City. You hear so many things about New York, just like Los Angeles or any other large city. Riding on the subway from Hoboken, I was keeping a close eye on the situation. After a while I noticed the people were just like anywhere else, most of them just trying to get to a destination, not even noticing the family of 7 from California. Sure there were colorful characters, but you know we have our share in California too!

Subway

On the Way to Times Square, the Subway was a Fun Ride for us All.

It must have been past 11:00 PM when we finally got off the subway at Times Square, but you wouldn't have known it by all of the activity. The streets were electric; lights, people, horses!, police everywhere, it was everything that we had seen on television and the Internet. It was surreal, and my older son looked up at me and said "Dad, this is where I want to live", I had to laugh. We ended up going to the QuickSilver store, getting some coffee and shopping for souvenirs at some of the shops around town. We had a blast.

Times Square

The activity was non-stop in Times Square, this picture was taken around Midnight.

My kids stood around with their mouths gaping open for quite a while in Times Square, we have been all over the country, seen a bunch of tourist attractions, but Times Square just seemed incredible after all the time we spent on the road to get there. We didn't have any problems at all when we were there. The Police were on almost every block we went down, walking, talking to people, standing by their cars keeping an eye on things. I felt safer in the middle of Times Square, than I ever did when we were in downtown Los Angeles or Saint Louis. It seemed to me that the subways and the streets were filled with people just like us, Tourists!

NYPD

There was a Police Sub-Station right in the Middle of Times Square, when we were there, it seemed like a very safe place to be.

For the Kids there was a couple of unexpected delights in Times Square, of course we bought them hot chocolate and other treats, but we didn't know that their old buddy Sponge Bob was going to be there too, the last time we saw him was on Television in California and he was in Bikini Bottom!

Sponge Bob

We came all the way to New York City, and look who was There!!

Anyway, I think the guy wanted a buck or two for the photo, so we tipped him a couple of dollars and headed down the road. Now I must have missed the fact that the Largest Toys-R-Us in the world is located in Times Square right around 48th and Broadway. You can't miss it, This place is a 110,000 square-foot, multilevel flagship Toys-R-Us store. The store boasts a working 60-ft. ferris wheel, a two-story Barbie doll house, and a five-ton, 20 ft. high, 34-ft. long animatronic T-Rex dinosaur! Needless to say, we spent some time there.

What a night, we were out until 2:30am, and it was still busy out there. We took the subway back to Hoboken station, unfortunately the rail back to Weehawken had closed for the night and we were stuck, without a ride back. So, I had to break down and pay the $$ for the cab ride back to the Sheraton. Oh well, it was a fun night, my kids still talk about it, even though we continue our travels to other major attractions.
