Driving to the Skywalk at Grand Canyon WestSo your considering driving to the Skywalk? Ok, let me give you the real story, I drove to the Grand Canyon Skywalk two weeks ago, I have vivid memories of the drive. First of all you have to know what to expect. I have read many postings on the Internet about the drive, and I must say that most of them were fairly accurate. Here's a video of what you can expect on the drive to the Skywalk. Keep in mind that I have a 2004 Honda Odyssey, so I wasn't driving a 4-wheel drive or an SUV. In fact I saw lesser vehicles on that bumpy dirt road to the Grand Canyon Skywalk and they all seemed to fair just fine.
The Road Ahead, the sign says 25 MPH, so plan on a 45 Minute Drive. This is the beginning of the road, which is much nicer than the ending of the road, so If your not down for a bumpy dusty ride, perhaps you should take a tour bus from Las Vegas or some "alternative" transportation. Sure, you could get a dent, a ding in your paint job, or maybe you would get a flat tire and overheat your car...Heck, maybe a rattlesnake will jump out of the bushes an bite you in the wanker!
It's a bumpy, dusty road, designed for the "risk-taker", or SUV driver! Look, I took this road with my wife and 3 kids (ages 9,12 and 14) sure it was bumpy, slow and tedious, so you have to decide if you are willing to take the drive. If you have a really nice car that you wax and wash each week and live and die by each scratch and ding, you certainly don't want to take this drive, otherwise it's just another challenge. The key is knowing what to expect, I was really worried after reading all the internet postings about this trip, but afterwards I realized that the people who were adversely affected by this trip didn't know what they were getting into. So, a word of caution, if your driving a junker, a car that has a questionable cooling system, or your just not sure...Just remove the stress and take a Grand Canyon Skywalk Tour Bus.
The Van 10 Miles into the Ride, Luckily the kids got to watch a Movie during the Drive. When the drive is finished you will end up at a place that looks like a Small Airport. At first I thought we took a wrong turn, but it turns out there's a bunch of air tours near the skywalk. After you are directed to your parking spot, you will walk to the "tour" office and sign up for your tour. After the sign up, you will be taking a bus to the Skywalk or other "View Points" near the entrance to the park. CLICK HERE to read more about the Grand Canyon West Skywalk.. |
